The Hawthorn Hedge

How long ago she planted the hawthorn hedge-
She forgets how long ago-
that barrier thorn across the hungry ridge;
thorn and snow.

It is twice as tall as the rider on the tall mare
Who draws his reins to peer
in through the bee-hung blossom. Let him stare.
No one is here.

Only the mad old girl from the hut on the hill,
unkempt as an old tree.
She will hide away if you wave your hand or call;
She will not see.

Year-long, wind turns her grindstone heart and whets
a thornbranche like a knife,
shouting in winter "Death"; and when the white bud sets,
more loudly, "Life".

She has forgotten when she planted the hawthorn hedge;
that thorn, that green, that snow;
birdsong and sun dazzled across the ridge-
It was long ago.

Her hands were strong in the earth, her glance on the sky,
her song was sweet on the wind.
The hawthorn hedge took root, grew wild and high
to hide behind.

La Haie d' Aubépine

Quand planta-t-elle la haie d'aubépine-
elle a oublié quand-
cette barrière d'épines sur la crête affamée;
épine et neige.

Elle est deux fois plus haute que le cavalier sur sa haute jument
qui tire sur les rênes pour épier
derrière les fleurs semeés d'abeilles. Laissez-le regarder.
Il n'y a personne ici.

Juste la vieille fille folle de la hutte sur la colline,
négligée comme un vieil arbre.
Elle se cachera si vous lui faites signe de la main ou l'appelez;
elle ne verra pas.

Tout le long de l'année, le vent tourne son cœur aiguiseur et affûte
la branche épineuse comme un couteau,
criant "Mort" en hiver; et quand les boutons blancs s'ouvrent
criant plus fort encore, "Vie".

Elle a oublié quand elle planta la haie d'aubépine;
Ces épines, ce vert, cette neige;
L'éblouissant chant d'oiseau et le soleil sur la crête-
C'était il y a longtemps.  

Son regard lancé vers le ciel, ses mains fortes remuèrent la terre,
Sa chanson dans le vent était douce.
La haie d'aubépine prit racine, grandit et s'éleva comme une plante sauvage
pour se cacher derrière.
