The Second Coming

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconner;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thights, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

La Seconde Venue

Tournoyant et tournoyant dans un cercle s'élargissant
Le faucon n'entend pas le fauconnier;
Les choses tombent en désuétude; l'axe s'affaiblit
Pure anarchie est lâchée sur le monde,
La marée teintée de sang monte et partout
La cérémonie de l'innocence se noie;
Les meilleurs manquent de conviction, tandis que les pires
Sont pleins d'intensité passionnée.

Sûrement le temps des révélations approche;
Sûrement la Seconde Venue approche.
La Seconde Venue ! A peine ces mots s'échappent
Qu'une vaste image sortie du Spiritus Mundi
Trouble ma vue: quelque part dans les sables du désert
Une forme au corps de lion et à tête d'homme
Bouge lentement ses membres, tandis qu'autour tout
Vacille sous l'ombre des oiseaux indignés du désert.
L'obscurité s'installe; mais maintenant je sais
Que ces vingt siècles de sommeil de pierre
Étaient condamnés au cauchemar depuis le berceau
Et quelle brute dont l'heure est enfin venue,
Marche négligemment vers Bethléem pour naître?
